>french art studio is pleased to present ‘Reflection’, a solo exhibition by Frederike von Cranach from 29 May to 6 June 2016.
Reflection is Frederike von Cranach’s first solo exhibition in the UK, where works on paper and on canvas and a selection of sculptures will be featured.
Von Cranach’s main source of inspiration comes from of Egagropili, straw-like and furry natural objects found in the Mediterranean sea. The Egagropili are the foliage produced from a plant called Posidonia Oceania, an important part of the ecosystem in the sea. It provides a stable seabed that regulates water current; it is a source of oxygen and is one of the oldest living organisms on earth. Their final form and shape occur through natural forces.
Cranach poetically embraces the potential of these organisms. Meditations on Egagropili pervade every surface; connections are made with thin lines and small gestures. The minimal monochrome and abstract ink drawings, collages and mixed media works create an environment from another universe, not the sea, not the earth, somewhere beyond, somewhere within.
Everything seems to be floating in her work, there are no rules related to real size. She plays with these proportions and leaves it to the viewer to reflect what they might see.
